An excellent turn out of twelve juniors running at the Wray Caton Fell Race on Monday. We were rewarded with three winners for the first race in the Horwich Junior Fell Championship.
Phoebe Howe won the U/12, brother Joesph won the U/14 and, not to be outdone, Zach Howe won the u/16. This bodes well for the future, and the next race in the Championship, Belmont Winter Hill on the 9th May.

Report - Horwich RMI Harriers, Young Athletes League Wigan – 3rd May
Horwich RMI Harriers achieved their greatest team success on the Track to date winning the opening fixture of the Young Athletes League and defeating Wigan Harriers in a close fought battle at their Home Track on Sunday. For a club who has only started specialising in Track and Field over the past few years this win was testament to the dedication of the athletes and coaches involved and demonstrates that Horwich RMI is now one of the premier Track and Field clubs in the North.
Leading the way were the U 13s with two athletes in the girls, Laura Taylor and Gabrielle Whittle winning all three of their events, Laura also claimed a club record in the Hurdles whilst Gabrielle was named Club Athlete of the Match for Horwich RMI Women for her Grade 2 performance over 75 m. In the U 13 boys Noah Saunders and James Lovell ensured clean sweeps over 100m and 200m as did Nathan Townsend and Joseph Howe in the 1500m and Thomas Gillett and Izaak Dickinson in the hurdles. For good measure Joseph also won the High Jump.
In the U 15 girls Beth Miller secured two firsts over 100m and 200m whilst in the boys wins were gained by Matthew Ault in the 800m and Shot, Jacob Thornton over 1500m, Shaun Palmer in the hurdles and Adam Taylor in the Hammer.
For the U 17 women Rebecca Atkinson and Laura Tunstall had double victories over 1500m and 3000m and 1500m and Javelin respectively. Laura Bannister won the 300m Hurdles whilst Becky Buchanan and Tiff Dacre were also in winning mood in the Triple Jump and Hammer. In the U 17 Men Ola Abidojun and Dylan Smith had a double first in the 100m and then Dylan teamed up with Lewis Peacock for a repeat double victory in the Long Jump. Finally Jamie Crompton produced the performance of the day over 1500m steeplechase with a grade 1 performance to win Horwich RMI’s Club Man of the match award in a time which takes him to the top of the UK rankings in this event and follows up on his UK leading performance over 1500m, 3.57.3, at the Northern League on the day before

Ready, Steady Go! Horwich RMI Harriers & AC for 2009
Horwich RMI Harriers & AC Juniors get set for the 2009 season, which started with a warm up for some of the Juniors at the recent indoor Open meeting at Sportcity, Manchester. 25 young athletes competed on the day, with many personal bests and at least 3 new club records.
Fine debut performances for the Girls came from Jodie McLaughlin, Jessica Clarke, Grace and Emily Shelmerdine. For the Boys, great debuts from Izaak Dickinson, Anthony Hulton, Keegan Edwards, Liam Wright and Thomas Gillett.
3 New club records came from Alex Woods in the under 11 Girls 200m with a fantastic time of 34.20s and Kai Brown in the Under 11 Boys 200m with a time of 33.90s.
Not to be left out was Jonah Saunders with a sizzling time of 10.10s, breaking the Club Record in the 60m sprint, finishing 3rd overall.
Callum Gordon won the Under 9 Boys 60m sprint in a blistering time of 10.30s, whilst Jennie Maher won the Standing Long Jump for the Under 11 Girls with a leap of 1.58m. Well done to Luke Anderton who won the Under 11 Boys standing long jump with 1.76m and Ellie Dacre who was 2nd in the Girls Soft Javelin.
Sophie Williams won the Soft Javelin in the Under 13 girls category, whilst Lauren Ryder & Gabrielle Whittle ran well in the 60m sprint. Amelia Atherton produced her best in the standing triple jump, whilst Natassia Dacre threw well in the Soft Javelin.

Horwich RMI Harriers & AC turned out 24 athletes at the final meeting. Our Athletes performed magnificently and overall, the Horwich RMI Harriers Team finished in 3rd place in this tough and competitive League, behind Athletics “Premiership” teams, Preston & Blackpool.
Well done to Sophie Williams for breaking the Lancashire Sportshall Under 11 Girls record for Soft Javelin with a breath-taking throw of 20.25m. Congratulations to Martha Gill, who won the under 11 girls athlete of the whole tournament.
There were also many brave performances from the under 11’s including Eleanor Aindow, Jodie McLaughlin, Jenny Maher, Luke Anderton, Mackenzie Dacre and Kai Brown.
Under 13’s were supported by Noah Saunders, Gabrielle Whittle, Katie Bridge and Natassia Dacre. Under 15’s were Hannah Storey and Tiffany Dacre.
The individual age group final positions are as follows:-
Under 11 Girls – 2nd place Under 11 Boys – 3rd place

Report for National Indoor Championships 2009
April Stevenson continued her excellent indoor form winning the Silver Medal at the National Indoor Championships on Sunday.
April has already gained a silver in the North of England indoor championships and it was the same two girls, Leigh Lennon from Ribble Valley and April who battled it out again for the National title. Leigh once again went off fast and held the lead but April closed up on Leigh but just ran out of time to catch her, losing by just one second. With April having only just moved up into this age group it’s a successful start to 2009 for the 16 year old.
April’s next target will be an International Match to be held in Malta in 8 weeks time where both April and her club mate, Jamie Crompton (2000m Steeplechase) have been selected to represent the North of England team against teams from Malta, Egypt, Tunisa and Wales.

Juniors out in all weathers!
Martha Gill and Sophie Myers have been braving the weather - and just to make it harder they thought they'd do a swim first - 250m followed by a 2000m run.
The girls were competing in the Mersey tri club's 'aquathon' on Sunday. The age group in which they race had to endure the worst of the weather and the girls were still smiling at the end of it!
They both did extremely well.

Horwich RMI Harriers & AC Raise £ 560.50 for Derian House
Fifty two young athletes from Horwich RMI Harriers & AC took part in the Horwich Rotary Xmas Heptathlon last December. All the young athletes ran, jumped and threw in 7 different indoor Sportshall athletic events in under 2 hours.
It was also a fund raising opportunity and these young athletes aged from 7 - 12 raised an amazing £ 560.50 towards a local children’s charity, Derian House.
A cheque was presented to Derian House by 4 of the young superstars on 7th February 2009.
