Clougha Pike Fell Race



Last Saturday four Juniors represented Horwich in the Clougha Pike Fell Race and with some excellent performances where rewarded with both individual and Team success. Nathan Townsend had his best run on the fells to take a well deserved victory and was well backed up by Cameron Critchley in third. Will Townsend ran very well for sixth place and Jonathan Powis was a very clear seventh and enabled Horwich to take the team award. All are looking forward to this Sunday when the English Junior Uphill Championships take place in Patterdale.

Report - Horwich RMI Harriers North of England Championships and Young Athletes League - Wigan – 21st June

Horwich RMI Harriers had a successful day at the North of England Championships picking up two silver medals.



April Stevenson continued her return to good form following injury. Having comfortably won her 800m heat she ran confidently in the final to record a seasons best of 2.11.41. Meanwhile Jamie Crompton stepped up an age group to take silver in the 1500m. Despite being only 16 Jamie took on the best 17 – 19 year olds in the North over 1500m winning silver in 3.57.96

Many of Horwich’s teenage Athletes competed in the Young Athletes League at Wigan on Sunday. It was a tough fixture with the top three clubs in the league competing however there were a number of great performances from the local team.




Leading the way were the U 13s who set three club records. Laura Taylor smashed the clubs High Jump record and achieved a grade 1 performance whilst Gabrielle Whittle was just outside a grade 1 with her hurdles time. For the boys Nathan Townsend broke one of the clubs longest standing records in the 1500m.

In the U 15 age group Ellen Warburton set a new club record in the Long Jump whilst Jacob Thornton achieved a double first over 400m and 1500m.

Dylan Smith and Benita Cornforth were the clubs most successful U 17s with Dylan gaining maximum points in the Long and Triple jump whilst Benita did the same in the Hammer and shot.

Greater Manchester Schools 2009

Horwich RMI athletes had a field day at the Greater Manchester Schools Championships picking up eight medals and a host of personal bests.



Leading the way was Jamie Crompton, the UK’s current no 1 U 17 middle distance runner. This time he chose to run the steeplechase and ran away from the field to smash the championship record and further cement his position at the top of the UK rankings.



April Stevenson had a good day too winning two titles and breaking her personal best and club record over 400m in the process, whilst Dylan Smith continues to show his potential in winning the Long Jump.

Report - Horwich RMI Harriers, Young Athletes League

East Cheshire – 31st May and Bedford International

Horwich RMI Harriers continued their good form with a strong second to hosts East Cheshire Harriers in their latest fixture with Bolton United Harriers finishing 3rd and Holmforth 4th.



Most successful athlete of the day was Hannah Storey who won all three of her events, the U 15 girls 100m , 200m and 75m Hurdles with a club record performance over 200m.



Another triple winner was U 17 woman Benita Cornforth who won the Shot, Discus and Hammer, whilst in the same age group Laura Bannister won the 300m Hurdles and Triple Jump. In the B string Rebecca Buchanan and Tiffany Dacre both won two events each whilst Amy Philpotts won the Discus.

In the U 13 girls there were double wins for Laura Taylor (Long Jump and Hurdles), Gabrielle Whittle (High Jump and B Hurdles) and Martha Gill (B string High and Long Jump) with a double victory in the shot through Natassia Dacre and Sophie Williams.

In the U 17 men Dylan Smith had a double win in the 100m and Triple Jump whilst Lewis Peacock also had two wins in the B string Long and Triple jumps. Jamie Crompton had easy victories in the 3000m and 1500m steeplechase as did Matthew Ault in the U 15 800m.

At U 13 level there was a double win in the 1500m through Nathan Townsend and Joseph Howe whilst the 4 x 100m team of Anthony Hulton, James Lovell, Isaak Dickinson and Noah Saunders set a new club record.

Bedford Games

Meanwhile sprinter Ola Abidogun had been invited to compete at the Bedford Games international meeting.

Competing in the disabled 100m Ola stormed through to win by a huge margin in 11.51 seconds and earn qualification for an international match in Germany later this summer.

Mid Lancs League Meeting 2 - Hyndburn 30th May



With the sun beating down and the smell of sun cream filling the air 13 competitors turned out for an excellent days competition in Hyndburn.

Some familiar faces from the Horwich squad were joined by 3 debuting senior competitors, Alison Storey, Andrew Storey and Trevor Williams.

Alison jumped an excellent PB in the long jump with 3.12m with Andrew reaching 4.56m and Trevor 4.09m.

Trevor also produced a great throw of 7.69m in the shot with Jack Thomas achieving 7.46m here also.



Andrew and Jack later teamed up with Matt Storey and Carl Foster, to cover an age range of some 30 years, and produced a fantastic performance in the 4 X 100m relay event.

A big thank you to all those who gave their time as officials throughout the day, especially Andy Townsend, Pauline and Trevor Williams, Mike Howe, Fiona Myers, Steve Thomas and Noah Saunders.

Report for Northern Outdoor Championships 2009 plus Junior League and Trafford Open





Jamie Crompton cemented his position as the UK’s number one U 17 steeplechaser by winning the North of England title. Jamie literally ran away from the competition winning by 20 seconds His time is a new club record and takes him into the top 30 of all time for the event.

Meanwhile a number of Horwich Athletes competed in other meetings over the Bank Holiday.

At the Junior League match at Preston and following his North of England win Jamie Crompton stepped up in distance to run the 2000m steeplechase and again continued his winning form in a time which takes him straight to the top of the UK rankings for an U 20 despite still only being 16.



Jack Thomas was close to his best in winning the 100m B race whilst April Stevenson had a comfortable win over 800m.



At Trafford Young Athletes Open meeting Gabrielle Whittle continued to show her all round potential as she picked up three medals, two silvers and a bronze in the Hurdles, High Jump and 75m.

Horwich RMI Harriers maintained their winning form in the Young Athletes League at Warrington on Sunday. Despite atrocious weather conditions there were a number of great performances.

Once again Jamie Crompton was to the fore with a scintillating run in the 1500m steeplechase to record the fastest time in the country so far this year and then backed it up woth a win in the Javelin ! Also at U 17 Dylan Smith had a double win in the 100m and Long Jump whilst at U 15 level Matthew Ault won the High Jump and shot. In the U 13s there were strong firsts in the middle distance with Joseph Howe triumphing over 800m and Nathan Townsend doing likewise over 1500m.





In the U 17 Women there was a double first over 100m through Rachel Pearson and Tiffany Dacre and also in the Hammer with Benita Cornforth and Tiffany Dacre. At U 15 level Hannah Storey and Beth Miller were totally dominant winning both A and B races over 100m and 200m, whilst Laura Taylor and Gabrielle Whittle ensured a double first at U 13 level in the hurdles.



Overall the U 17 women, U 15 women and U 13 boys won their sections whilst all the other teams were second in their categories ensuring overall victory.
