2007 Christmas Heptathlon

Indoor Sportshall Agility Challenge

This was held at the Bolton Arena on Monday 3rd December 2007 and we had an incredible 65 Competitors from our own club competing! What a fantastic night, packed with fun for all those that took part. All the young athletes had to run, jump and throw in 7 different events in less than 2 hours.

This was predominantly a competition for our Under 12 years of age. Athletes were put into 7 different teams, all of which were Captained by the older Athletes i.e. from Under 13’s, & 15’s.

The winners were the “Cupid Team”, captained by Sam Mercer, with the rest of the team being, Noah Saunders, Alex Critchley, Amelia Atherton, Sally Burton, Holly Clarke, Jake Haslam, Jane Moorhouse and Penny.

It was also a fund raising opportunity and to date we estimate we may collect in the region of £400 towards a local charity Nr Chorley, “Rainbow House”.

A huge thank you for all the Parents, who helped officiating on the night. We could not have pulled off this type of event without that kind of support.

We had special guests on the night from Wigan Harriers, Don Moss and Sharon Walls (GB Athlete – presented the prizes). Sarah Friday from England Athletics also made a visit.

Finally, a big thank you to the Rotary Club of Horwich for supporting this year’s event. Rotarian Billy Bromilow commented on what a great event this was and it’s a credit to the Community of Horwich and Districts!

All our Athletes had a great night and they all competed with good spirit, great behaviour and gave their best for each event. Congratulations to everyone, they may their Coaches very proud!

A message from Neil Critchley

I have been to the Red Rose Cross Country meets this year and would like to give the Horwichs cross country junior team a mention.

Sam Boardman and Cameron Critchley are both securing top 10 spots in 5th and 9th respectively, I would like to mention that after a quarter of a mile on a very boggy surface Cameron lost his shoe, did not stop as he could not see where it went and completed in 16th on the day, one shoe Horwich record to Cameron.

It is getting a more regular occurance but two outstanding performances were given a dent sending athletes the wrong way, losers from Horwich on this occasion Jamie Crompton who was winning his race and Sam Boardman who was a strong 4th in his, well done to Simon Rasleigh and other Horwich Cross Country youngsters who are consistently showing strong performances off the track and road.

Keep it up, a fantastic future ahead I think for Horwich and the Steve Pearson and Ian Smith Dream team of runners.

Horwich RMI Athletes run for Lancashire

North West Regional Under 11’s Indoor Sportshall Athletics Final 2007

This Final was held at Sportcity, Manchester on 25th November 2007. Teams from the North West of England i.e. Cheshire, Manchester, Cumbria and Liverpool etc, competed in the County Finals of this event. Horwich RMI Harriers had 7 of their young athletes representing Lancashire on the day in a spectacular Competition.

All our young stars performed magnificently on the day in front of a large audience, against the top athletes from the North West and can be extremely proud of their efforts.

Congratulations to Martha Gill who was chosen as Captain of the Lancashire Girls Team. The Horwich Athletes produced fine performances including a new Lancashire record achieved by Natassia Dacre with an awesome throw of 17 metres.

All the running events were “team events” and all our athletes gave 100%, with some exciting races.

Congratulations to the following athletes that took part,

Martha Gill, Natassia Dacre, Georgia Chadbond, Noah Saunders
Jake Haslam, Nathan Townsend, Jonah Saunders & Ellie Dacre (1st Reserve).

The Under 11 Girls Team almost won the event, and finished in a fantastic 3rd Place, just 4 points behind 2nd place and 10 points behind the overall winners Liverpool.

For the Boys Under 11 Team, they also performed well finishing in 5th place overall, with the eventual winners being Liverpool, again!

STOP PRESS

Just a short note to let you know that Horwich RMI Harriers AC took part in the first meeting of the 2007/2008 Indoor Sportshall season. There were some great performances on the day, including many fine debuts from our new younger athletes.

This indoor competition is designed for all children in school years 4 to 10 (Under 11's, 13's & 15's). It produced some very exciting individual and relay races and field events, plus a few "lost voices" from the spectators.

About 30 of our young athletes competed on the day, with CONGRATULATIONS to the Under 13 Boys, who won their Age group, beating the mighty Premiership Athletic Clubs of Blackpool and Preston.

CONGRATULATIONS also to Martha Gill, who produced the best "all round" performance and won "Athlete of the Match" for the Under 11 Girls. Onlooking the event was Sarah Friday, Regional Performance & Development Co-ordinator from England Athletics (North West Region), who presented the well deserved Athlete of the Match Tee shirt to Martha (see photo).

Overall, the combined team event, Blackpool were the winners in this 1st Round, Second place went to Preston and very closely followed by Horwich RMI Harriers AC, who were 3rd Place on the day.

Full results and report will follow in the next week or two, once received from the Organisers.

LANCASHIRE SPORTSHALL LEAGUE Blackpool Sports Centre

4th November 2007 (10:00am register)

This is a great event for our younger athletes to enter.

I attach a scanned entry-form for this event (below) which takes place on 4th November 2007 at Blackpool Sports Centre, Stanley Park. It is the first indoor Sportshall event of the year.
We came 3rd overall last year behind Blackpool (winners) and Preston (runners-up), so it would be great to have as many of our athletes there to compete and finish on top!

Remember it is ages as at 31/08/2007 and we have 3 age categories:-

under 11's (must be age 8 on day of competition), which is mainly Yr 4, 5 & 6
Please advise Mark/Belinda if you wish to compete

under 13's, which is Yr 7 & 8
Please speak to your Coach to discuss

under 15's, which is Yr 9 & 10
Please speak to your Coach to discuss

Please note that for Under 11's, this first round meeting is used as a qualifier to select athletes to represent the county of Lancashire. Last year 12 of our athletes were selected and we would like to have as many there as possible. If selected, then they will take part in the Regional Finals day at Sportcity, Manchester on 25th November 2007 against many other Counties in front of over 800 spectators!!!!

For the Under 13's and Under 15's, their performances are also measured and are looked at after all the 3 meetings have taken part! Again selection to represent Lancashire will also be made for next years Under 13 & 15 Regional Finals. We were extremely proud of 2 of our young athletes last year who went on and competed for the Under 13 boys in the UK National Finals held at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham. Let's see if we can get more this time round.

Year 5 & 6 Training Full

As at 08/10/2007 the Training session for Mondays from 7-8 pm for Yr 5&6 is FULL. There are no spaces left at this moment, however, we will be keeping a reserve/waiting list if people still wish to register for that session.
Again, we only have a few spaces left for the Yr 3&4 slot on Mondays from 6-7 pm!

Mark Dacre.

Primary League Meeting, Wigan

Round 2 22 June 2007

This was the 2nd Meeting held for the 2007 season for Year 2 to 6 and our Team turned out 13 athletes on the day despite the terrible weather on the night!

There were some impressive performances on the night including promising High Jumps from Cameron Critchley, Sophie Williams and Amelia Atherton, who all cleared 0.90m. In the Soft Javelin, Jonah Saunders threw 9.20m for 4th place and Sophie Williams reached 9.90m for 2nd in the Girls event.

In the older Yr 5&6 Category, there were great performances from Beth Miller and Matthew Dickinson.

This match was affected by the inclement weather, so was held indoors, which meant no track races could take place, however, we did manage to get through the four field events scheduled for that evening.

Credit must be passed on to the children who behaved magnificently throughout the evening considering the confined space of the indoor training facilities. Thanks to all those parents that helped out on the night.

We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on 20th July 2007.
